New LEGO Movie Spin-Off Announced

Post by Johnnyred on Thu Mar 26, 2015 12:28 am

"According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Segel and Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce have signed on to write and direct a new Lego Movie spinoff called The Billion Brick Race. This will be the fifth film in the Lego Movie franchise, following the announcements of 2016's Ninjago, 2017's The Lego Batman Movie, and 2018's Lego Movie 2. The Lego Movie remains a heartwarming tribute to creativity and originality."

I heard they are making a LEGO Movie sequel before I heard anything about them making a Ninjago or a Batman movie. Razz

I rather they did not make a LEGO Batman movie since the Batman characters are owned by DC Comics and it just is not the same spirit if they did a construction toy version of him.

@ Tak - It was announced along with Ninjago and Batman last year shortly after the LEGO Movie released.  It's already been in production for like two years...

@ Joe - Here's the thing about that.  There's no such thing as changing the spirit.  And technically LEGO has already done "construction toy" versions of him, and there's been like three LEGO Batman direct to DVD movies, plus three LEGO Batman games, and he's already been featured in the LEGO Movie.

As far as changing the spirit goes... as I said, there's no such thing as changing it... I mean.  Let's look at Batman in mainstream media.  Batman got his start on the silver screen with the 1950's Gotham serials.  Next up was the 60's Batman series starring Adam West.  Those were VASTLY different from each other.  BY SO MUCH.  While both had something of a light-hearted spirit, they were still vastly different.  The 50's serials were much darker and actually had a lot of violence in it compared to the 60's series.  Now, let's progress to the 90's Michael Keaton/George Clooney/Val Kilmer movie series.  Um... yeah.  I don't think I have to say it... but it was different.  Much different.  It was basically a combination of the 50's series and the 60's series.  Gotham was colorful yet dark, the Joker was a colorful, insane, but evil villain, Batman, was dark, brooding, and a ladies man, Gotham was evil.  As the series progressed, it introduced darker themes, and got kinda ridiculous with somethings.  I'm  referencing a specific costume within the series.

Next, we come to the Dark Knight Trilogy, which... um... yeah... it kinda blows the prior series out of the water IMO.  The Dark Knight trilogy introduced a realistic Gotham, realistic Batman, realistic weapons, gadgets, villains, etc.  Once again, vastly different from the previous series.  I'm looking at you, Bat-Shark-Repellant.  Next, there's the new DCU which, obviously we don't know much about yet, but it will be vastly different again from the series in the past.

Then there's the various animated series.  Each different from the last, even in the comics, from storyline to storyline.  Not to mention if they change who Batman is like in the Knightfall arc when Azrael  took up the mantel of Batman while the Bruce Wayne was out injured thanks to Bane.

There's also the fact that LEGO Batman has been voted (albeit by IGN) the second most popular Batman incarnation (beaten only by Christian Bale).

Honestly?  A LEGO Batman movie is an excellent move by both LEGO AND DC.  And as far as characters?  Honestly, I'm foreseeing that there won't be many DC original characters, and those that are there will probably only be in cameos.  Plus, nothing says it can't be in the same spirit as one of the Bat-verse incarnations of Batman.  The only difference is that it would just be more blocky.  So let's kick back and see how awesome the LEGO Batman movie will be!

@ Dalu - .... I can't believe you.  Leave my presence and go watch the LEGO Movie.  NAO.

I'm surprised.... no one is talking about The Billion Brick Race.  Razz  That's the whole point of this topic.  XD

@Johnnyred: Yeah right! Like how Marvel back in 1984 got interested in making Hasbro's The Transformers comic books and animated series. (Which were a huge success then) Razz Then in the 90's came the Beast Wars which were pretty boring in my opinion. And there were several other animated series of The Transformers that went downhill and lacked story. Then came the very first live-action film of Transformers from 2007 directed by Michael Bay. (The film grossed over millions) Then the other live-action films went downhill to some audiences. (Depends on when you were born and what you grew up with)

Anyways, point taken with LEGO and DC making a great partnership. But they have no intentions on making a LEGO Star Wars movie or a LEGO Marvel Super Heroes movie since Lucasfilm and Marvel are currently partnered with Disney and Disney does not like LEGO enough to make The LEGO Movie. No offense but Warner Bros. was the only company interested to make The LEGO Movie. (Kind-of like how the people at Legendary Pictures were huge fans of Godzilla and decided to reboot the film)

Okay, let us get back on subject here.

I guess you could compare the Transformers series somewhat to the Batman series.  If that gives you an idea of what I'm saying, go right ahead.  (Also, the live-action movies, with with the exception of the first, all went downhill.  They kinda have been nominated for quite a few Golden Raspberries... and have won quite a few as well.)

Technically they've already done both of those, though they were direct-to-DVD.  Also, why do they have to make those?  What difference does that make as to the quality of the LEGO Batman Movie?  It's not like they're trying to make a LEGO DC Universe series, this is a LEGO Movie Spin-Off, it takes place in the same world and Batman in that world.  I don't foresee a LEGO Superman movie, or a LEGO Justice League Movie, or a LEGO Wonder Woman movie, they're making a movie about one of the most popular characters of the LEGO Movie similar to the Minions movie that Dreamworks is making.

Also, who says Disney wasn't interested in making the LEGO Movie?  The LEGO Movie was not actually LEGO's brainchild.  In fact, they were disinterested in making the LEGO Movie when Dan Lin, an executive at Warner Brothers, pitched his idea to the company in 2008.  LEGO was alread a successful and powerful brand at the time, and they didn't think that they needed a movie to try to put them on top.  However, they decided to and it was a hit.  It's not that no one else wanted to do it, it's that Warner Brothers was innovative enough to think of it first before Disney, before Dreamworks, before Universal before anyone else thought of it.  Honestly, if at the time, Disney had had the time to be involved they probably would've, but during these times, they were probably too busy with the MCU and acquiring Lucas Films.
