Books Becoming Movies: The Silmarillion

Post by Tater on Thu Jan 29, 2015 4:08 pm

Alright, first off, just no. Please, don't make the Silmarillion into a movie. The way it was written was more of a history book and would be very hard to make into a movie that make sense. There were so many subplots and personal stories going on that Tolkien beautifully wove together to create the book.

While, a small part of me would love to see the characters brought to life, I'm so afraid that it would be ruined. There is no way this book could be wrapped up in three movies if they decided to do a trilogy. I think it's better left the way it is. The pure amount of characters that where brought in though out the book and with the times and switching back and forth from elves to elves to here. I think most people would get so wrapped up and forget what was going on. It can be a pretty difficult book to read, and sense there isn't that much dialogue, I think it'd be hard to really get it to work.

What about y'all? What do you think?

I just don't think we are in the right place that a Silmarillion movie would be feasible. At standard length it'd have to be, like, half a dozen parts to get even most of the stuff in. It just wouldn't work.

That said, I could see it as a Game of Thrones - style series, but it would require a massive budget and a huge effort behind it.

I'd assume he'd just use some of  the major stories and not use the others.  But no, I do not want to see this as a film unless it's SUPER good.  And I don't expect it to be.

There are some things that are just too beautiful to imagine, like the singing in the first chapter.  Let's not hamper that beauty by influencing people to take a narrow view of it through some film's weak interpretation. Sad

The question is, can Jackson be trusted to take The Silmarillion--a work of timeless quality, beauty, and imagination--and give it justice in the world of the theatrical?

Given the job he did with the Hobbit trilogy, I give this resounding exclamation:

SOMEBODY STOP HIM BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, he would destroy it. He did really well on LOTR, but there were still things in those that were far from what they should be (e.g. how weak Jackson portrayed Gandalf in the confrontation with the Witch King). And although I enjoyed much of the Hobbit trilogy, there were so many blatant things wrong with those movies that I do not trust Jackson in any serious way to make the Silmarillion into a worthwhile, epic, deep, and timeless string of films. He'd probably do something ornery with the incarnation of the Valier, and he might include another totally un-Tolkienian romance (like the one between Tauriel and Kili), maybe between a female Maia and a dwarf, or (who knows?) a romance between an Orc and a Valier. Razz

Don't get me wrong: there were many things I loved about Jackson's Hobbit trilogy. But there were many things very wrong about those films that have utterly shaken my confidence in Jackson's ability to do The Silmarillion justice in the theatrical world.

I'm intrigued by the possibility of a Silmarillion theatrical project, but as many have stated, the Silmarillion is just so dense with details and a multitude of ways to interpret characters that it just couldn't be properly conveyed in such a confined form of expression. I personally wouldn't trust anyone with the Silmarillion. I both love and dislike certain things Jackson did with both the Hobbit and Lotr, but I seriously doubt his capability in adapting such a vast work of art. Or anyone's, for that matter. :/

I should probably go read the book before saying anything. Razz  It's about time I did really, because I've read The Hobbit and LOTR a lot.

I feel like the Silmarillion would be better handled as a (family friendly) Netflix Original or HBO series.

I would rather HBO make it as violent and gory as Game of Thrones than have Peter Jackson put his grimy paws on it. Razz

Well, the Silmarillion kind of is a violent and not-so-kid-friendly story anyway. ;w; You can't gloss over some gross stuff and the genocide of many people without taking out the darkness that is an underlying theme of the Silmarillion.

We might also further that analogy by stating that he pulled out all the guts, kept the skeleton, then stuffed the skeleton again with 1/3 guts and 2/3 homemade stuffing. Razz

This... is not happening. Ever. Razz

If you were to Google "Chris Tolkien", the results would be a bunch of articles on how much he hates what Peter Jackson did to his father's work, especially the Hobbit.

I think Jackson did well with LOTR, but I understand quite well why Christopher abhors Jackson's Hobbit failures. Jackson peppered the Hobbit with a lot of theatrical epicness (and for that he must be praised), but he somehow managed to simultaneously take away a deeper epicness that can be found only when one reads the book.

Well, if Jack did anything, he probably helped sell a lot of editions of The Hobbit book to people who got curious about it after seeing the films. Razz

Oh yes, and he also succeeded in getting the rather corny cartoon versions of the Dwarves and Bilbo OUT of my mind when I read the book. Razz I'm quite grateful for that.  I thought they were seared there permanently. Razz
