Em's Ship and crew thingy thing

Post by Em on Wed Aug 08, 2012 12:22 am

Name & Rank: Second Lieutenant Maldwyn "Em" Quaker

Current Position: Pilot of the Ringneck, a prototype Harpeagle-class Shuttle/Frigate

Age: 23 standard years old.

Height: 5'3" or 1.6 meters

Appearance: Maldwyn is somewhat short and frail-looking. He's not very muscular (though he isn't fat, either. He's rather wiry) and always wears a special face mask around his neck (a breathing apparatus for when he needs it). Maldwyn is less able physically than most men and women in the PCG, and it shows in his appearance. Thin, short, and the inability to properly stand up straight are but a few examples of his setbacks. His dark brown hair is usually worn messy, somewhat longer than regulations permit (however, he doesn't let his hair grow long enough to impair his piloting). His blue-grey eyes are his most striking feature, however-- Although young, his eyes are wise and caring. Based on looks, he's not unattractive, but due to his height, lack of muscle, and lack of ability, he's not considered attractive, either.

Medical Record: Maldwyn suffers from a very rare lung illness coined "drowning lungs." Drowning Lung is when the lungs create excess mucus and phlegm that collects and creates a layer around the lungs, making it very hard to breathe. Although this illness is treatable, it isn't curable. This illness makes it difficult for Maldwyn to breathe, so he wears what he calls a "rebreather" around his neck at all times. This is an apparatus that helps cleanse his lungs of some excess liquids, restoring oxygen to them and allowing him to breathe easier. However, wearing this too much or all the time will impair his ability to live without it, so he only uses it in times of need. This illness has affected his personality, though not for the worse. Indeed, it is for the better-- He is always friendly, and always willing to listen, to help, and to become friends with anyone. He's one of the kindest hearts in the PCG, leading to his general popularity.
Drowning Lungs also hampers his ability to move, so often he requires aid in moving around.

Pre-service Record: Before joining military service at the age of 18, Maldwyn worked with his father in a garage, tinkering with cars, planes, ships, and other gadgets, quickly realizing that it was something he could do, regardless of his illness. He quickly because very tech-minded, and is often tinkering with this or that on his ship, or some equipment for the field. In fact, most of the time, when he is not piloting, he still tinkers.

Track Record: Maldwyn is perhaps the best frigate pilot in the PCG, and although he admits he's good, he refuses to accept that he is the best, claiming that he's "just a sickly old shuttle pilot who has pulled a few marines out of some hot spots." This doesn't change the fact he became a double-ace on his first mission, shooting down eleven enemy ships and extracting nearly a full platoon of soldiers. He may not be able to pilot a fighter or capital ship as well as some other PCG members, but his frigate skills are unmatched, especially behind the stick of the Ringneck. In the Academy, he quickly climbed the ranks and beat even his teachers in the simulators. He takes risks, but not with anyone's lives but his own. He's noble, honest, friendly, and quite frankly, a hero. Although weak physically, his piloting skills more than make up for that. He'll fight to protect what he knows is right and those he loves.

>That's all I've got for now, subject to change. I'm just really tired. Razz
The crew will come tomorrow, and I'll start working on the ship as soon as I can. Please post any suggestions, comments, or constructive criticism.

Impressive profile! I REALLY like the character! I love it when a hero has to work to win, and undergoes tough times and isn't perfect. This is one of the best profiles I've seen... if not the best (in my opinion anyway Razz ) Does this reflect who you are in real life? Or was this a "I think I'll try a challenge instead of just being perfect" kind of thing? Either way, it is VERY impressive! I get the feeling we're going to work well together! Very Happy Both of us like to invent things.... (well, for me, in game at least, I'm more of a "that would work" kind of guy than a "let's go try it!" type) we ought to toss some ideas around.

Actually, I made this character in one of the RPGs here, because I wanted something new, a challenge.
Just so happens it turned out to be the best character I've ever created, most likely, and due to popular demand I transferred him to the PCG.
I'm VERY fond of this character, actually, but it doesn't reflect who I am IRL. Razz
And thank you!
Tossing ideas around seems fun. Razz

Well, you got a challenge, in a good way! VERY impressive! I can't speak for the other characters you've created... but this one is GOOD, REALLY good. I can see why you like this one so much, he's a great character! Ah, understood. Many people will make their character "stronger" than the real them.... Greatly increased ability, without problems.... But you have created a very realistic character... one that I look forward to seeing more of.

I admit sometimes I do enjoy making characters with increased abilities and whatnot but there's something I really enjoy about Maldwyn. It just adds another dimension to his character, and I really like using that dimension to the fullest.
Thanks. Razz

Increased abilities are fun too, when done within reason. Me, I just use tech to increase ability without overpowering my character beyond being anything like me. Razz

Re: Em's Ship and crew thingy thing

Crew of the Ringneck:

~Captain Jeremy McKinley
Gender: Male
Age: 49
Appearance: McKinley is 5'10", with short light-brown hair (complete with a receding hairline and a growing bald spot) and a neatly trimmed beard. He's of average build, and his age shows.
Track Record: McKinley is a rough-and-tumble captain. During his earlier years he taught at the flight school, and ended up teaching Second Lieutenant Quaker-- subsequently getting beat by him in most simulator tests. McKinley, through his hard work and dedication, was put in charge of testing a new prototype ship design (The Ringneck) and handpicked a crew.

~Helmsman Maldwyn Quaker
Genger: Male
>Full profile at top<

~Comm Officer Corrina Teeples
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Appearance: Corrina is short, standing at 5'2". She has shoulder-length red hair (not ginger, red, as in the colour red, as in red). Slim build.
Track Record: Handpicked by Captain McKinley as the best communications officer in the fleet, Corrina is a master at deciphering info (especially when Jennifer is helping her) and sending tight-beamed encrypted messages. She's a hard worker and very determined, prone to over-analyzing data.

~Security Officer Theodore Vegas
Gender: Male
Age: 32
Appearance: Vegas is six feet of solid muscle, complete with a buzz cut and thin black chinstrap. He's got a few scars on his face, but nothing too major.
Track Record: Although a somewhat mean looking individual, he cares a lot about the crew of the Ringneck, and would do anything to protect them. Although it seems like he doesn't take things seriously sometimes, when he commits to something, he fully commits.

~Gunnery Chief Merilyn Rummler
Gender: Female
Age: 27
Appearance: Merilyn, referred to as Lyn by her friends, is 5'7" and athletic, though she spends a lot of her time working on the Ringneck's weapons systems.
Track Record: Lyn knows her way around guns, and is often calibrating and improving the Ringneck's guns. She can fire them accurately and also has fairly good aim with handheld weapons. It takes a good eye to calibrate, along with concentration, so often Lyn does not speak.

~Chief Engineer Lai Sprong
Gender: Female
Age: 35
Appearance: Lai is short, but she uses her height to reach difficult places when working on the Ringneck and her engines.
Track Record: As the chief engineer, she's somewhat of a genius, always tinkering around with the ship to make improvements when not fixing already broken things. She's friendly but usually shuts people out when working, due to her want of extreme concentration.

~Medical Officer Carolyn Rysengi
Gender: Female
Age: 52
Appearance: Carlyn is 5'5", with shoulder length somewhat curly grey hair. She's older, but she has aged well, and her grey hair and wisdom are the only real age indicators.
Track Record: Carolyn is the eldest member of the crew, but one of the best doctors in the fleet. She is often considered the most motherly figure aboard the Ringneck, and has bonded well with most of the crew.

~AI Unit: J-145 "Jennifer"
Gender Classification: Female
Specialization: Encryption, Decryption, monitoring communications, relaying communications, operating the cyber-warfare suites.
Personality: Jennifer shares a close bond with Maldwyn due to them working so closely together. As a full AI she is fully aware and has emotions and "preferences," making her a person, not just a program.

~Commander (XO) Chet Williams
Gender: Male
Age: 29
Appearance: Chet has short, curly black hair, and darker skin. He's 6'2" tall, making him the tallest crew member. Athletic build.
Track Record: Chet is somewhat of a weapons specialist, commanding whatever troops are to be shuttle with the Ringneck. He's got a level head and a steady hand.

Quarantine and Mess Officer: Jean-Marc Liaux
Gender: Male
Age: 35
Appearance: JM has short brown hair, usually slicked back or combed over.
Track Record: An excellent cook, JM also cleans. He's jokingly the "french maid" of the Ringneck.

This isn't very detailed, I was getting lazy. Might update it later. Razz

For "not being very detailed" this is GREAT! Very Happy

I enjoy the various personalities! I'd suggest having a couple of people who don't get along too well just to add interest to stories, but as you can always bring on a new ensign or a prisoner, or give somebody a bad day....

One question: Jennifer, is she in the ship's computer? Is she a hologram? Is she an android? Is she some sort of non humanoid robot? I think that she and Walter (my ship's chief medical officer, who happens to be a hologram) might get along well....

JAMMERS ON EM ONLY!

Even if she is in the computer now, it would be possible for her to be made into a hologram later on. Something you should know about Star Trek holograms, they are much more advanced than Star Wars holograms. Some of them have human level AI, and are as much human as their organic counterparts. Others are just part of hollow deck programs, not as advanced, limited in ability, and really just like a 3D, touchable, highly advanced computer game character.

JAMMERS OFF!

The PCG has gained a LOT through your joining.... a wise officer.... a great builder... I'm betting a good writer.... I'm really looking forward to working with you... Smile

I wanted the "main" crew to get along, but there will be others and stuff. And there are some friction-like elements I have planned. Just you wait. Razz

Jennifer basically IS the Ringneck-- She can control some of it, and is a fully realised Artificial Intelligence. She's a computer, basically, just one that's highly advanced.

JAMMERS ON DINO ONLY

I've got plans for her to gain an android body that looks really human, and that has some advanced abilities. She's based off EDI in Mass Effect.

JAMMERS OFF

Why thank you!

@Em thanks! That explains it!

@Crax (do you mind if I call you that? I don't want to seem to familiar) Because I don't know how to do a spoiler, and besides, tons of people use spoilers for pictures.... so why would this one be off limits? As to a PM... because I'm lazy and I know everyone here to be honorable Razz

The Ringneck

Post by Em on Fri Aug 10, 2012 4:10 pm

NOTE: This, like the actual ship itself, is a prototype. I'm going to work around with it, maybe change some things, add some details, etc. This is just a base model.

The Ringneck is a prototype Harpeagle-class vessel created to deploy advanced ground units deep into enemy territory, fight its way out, and then fight its way back in to extract the troops. Its main purpose is to scout and drop off advanced teams, and although small, it packs enough firepower to take on ships much larger than it.
The Ringneck is nearly 100 meters long, and it is able to operate at full capacity with a crew of around ten, due to the AI unit installed in the ship. There is room for twenty to thirty individual commandos to stay, with enough cargo space for their weapons, ammo, and armour. The Ringneck, having to be separated from the rest of the fleet, carries large stores of food, water, and medical supplies.
The Ringneck houses a large generator that powers cyclonic shielding and the engines, along with the stealth drive. The Cyclonic shielding allows the Ringneck to take glancing hits, and, instead of the shields absorbing this impact, these hits are "reflected" off, causing less shield drain. It does not affect direct hits, however. The engines allow the Ringneck to move at very fast speeds, and the maneuvering jets allow for more agility and a wide range of motion, along with easier banking and turning in Zero G. The stealth drive masks the Ringneck's energy and heat outputs, thus making it undetectable on sensors when the stealth drive is active. It is still, however, visible, so if someone were to look out a window... Even though windows are structural weaknesses.
As for armaments, the Ringneck has a Heavy Thanix Cannon and twin phasers, each powered by the same generator (though not the main one). The Heavy Thanix Cannon allows the Ringneck to hit fast and hard, but it draws a lot more energy, where the twin phasers allow the Ringneck to his fast, though not nearly as hard, while drawing less energy.
The Thanix cannon is a special type of cannon that uses an electromagnetic field to shape and accelerate a stream of superheated molten metal to relativistic velocities, which then impacts its target and deals horrendous damage. The weapon's fire appears as a bright blue beam. The Heavy Thanix Cannon can also penetrate medium and light shields.
